AI Is UI: Rethinking the Interface in the Age of Intelligent Systems
Spent the last two (2) weeks going to graduations for the US Naval Academy and the US Air Force Academy. Inspired by some of the stories of the graduates, had plenty of time to think about the technology future and an intriguing idea.
The phrase “AI is UI” captures a profound shift in how we interact with technology. In the past, user interfaces (UI) were static, graphical layers—buttons, menus, forms—sitting between humans and digital systems. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming this paradigm, making the interface not just a visual or tactile gateway, but an intelligent, adaptive, and even conversational partner. As we look to the future, the boundaries between AI and UI are blurring, suggesting that the interface itself will increasingly be the intelligence that mediates our digital experiences.
From Static Screens to Living Interfaces
Traditional UI design focused on clarity, consistency, and usability. The goal was to “get out of the way” and let users accomplish tasks with minimal friction. But AI is upending this model.
